Santa Monica

Publisher of Santa Monica Mirror, Michael Rosenthal, dies

(Created: Thursday, September 10, 2009 10:24 AM PDT)

Michael Rosenthal, publisher of The Santa Monica Mirror, passed away Wednesday morning, September 9th, Mirror representatives said.

Rosenthal had battled kidney cancer for several years, according to Mirror editor T.J. Montemer.

“Michael loved Santa Monica,” Montemer told The Argonaut. “He always considered what was in the best interests of the citizens of Santa Monica, and that is something that I’ll always remember about him.”

Rosenthal founded the Mirror in 1999 with his wife Laurie, who served as the newspaper’s first editor. He started Instant Replay, a full service video security company, in 1985.

Before moving to its current Santa Monica location on Wilshire Boulevard, the Mirror had its headquarters on Beach Avenue in Marina del Rey.

Rosenthal studied political science at California State University-Chico and received his bachelor’s degree in 1976.

Jerry Rubin, a longtime Santa Monica activist, has fond memories of Rosenthal, whom he says he knew for many years.

“Words cannot explain the sadness that I feel right now,” said Rubin. “It’s very ironic that on the day that we will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Santa Monica Pier we will also be mourning the loss of Michael Rosenthal.”

Funeral services for Rosenthal will be announced at a later date.
